As a child, I went to Cubs and Sunday School at St. Chrysostom&#8217;s church. I believe it has been demolished. I wonder why. Does anyone remember Miss Talbot, \u201cThe Grey Lady\u201d, who was some kind of nun and had a lot to do with the church?<\/p>\n<p>Although I have lived in Sussex for over 40 years, I still have such vivid and happy memories of my childhood in Peckham.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1131\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1131\" class=\"wp-image-1131 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/St-Chrysostom-1923-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/St-Chrysostom-1923-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/St-Chrysostom-1923.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Chrysostom in about 1923<\/p><\/div>\n<p>[St Chrysostom\u2019s in Peckham Hill Street survived the Second World War, though not without damage. An expensive but abortive attempt at restoration in 1960\/61 served only to accelerate decay in roof timbers. At the end of 1962 the building was found to be unsafe and had to be vacated.
