{"id":2478,"date":"2020-02-09T16:51:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T16:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/?p=2478"},"modified":"2021-06-21T00:00:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-20T23:00:04","slug":"the-spitta-family-of-peckham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/?p=2478","title":{"rendered":"The Spitta family of Peckham"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In W H Blanch\u2019s book <em>Ye Parish of Camerwell<\/em>: \u201cThe wealthy family of Spitta lived [in Peckham House] in great style, giving f\u00eates, or what would now be termed garden-parties, to their neighbours, and dispensing charity with no niggard hand amongst the poor of the locality.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Several generations of the family were associated with Peckham:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>1. Charles Lewis Spitta (1747-1822)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Charles Lewis Spitta was born Carl Ludewig Spitta on 24 December 1747 in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, Germany. He moved to England as a young man and became a naturalised British subject in 1775. He later became a partner in a business in Lawrence Pountney Lane. (\u201cMolling, Spitta &amp; Molling, Merchts., 34, Dowgate-hill\u201d in Directory of London and Westminster, &amp; Borough of Southwark. 1794) CLS1 married Ann Cobb (1757-1813) \u201cof Twickenham\u201d on 12 October 1782 at Saint Michael Paternoster in the City of London. They lived in \u201cthe fine mansion in the Peckham Road\u201d. (Blanch)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They had eight children who were all baptised at St Giles, Camberwell &#8211; so the family were living in the locality at least between 1785 and 1799.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Catharine Spitta (1785\u20131839)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Henry Author Spitta (1787\u20131864)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Charles Lewis Spitta (1789\u20131849)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Benjamin Spitta (1789\u20131818)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ann Spitta (1790\u20131821)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sophia Spitta (1792\u2013 ?)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sarah Spitta (1793\u20131823).<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Francis John Spitta (1799\u20131887)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ann died in 1813 and was buried on 3 May 1813 at St Michael Paternoster Royal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There was a bankruptcy hearing in 1816 (\u201cCharles Lewis Spitta, Frederick Molling, Godfrey Molling, and Henry Author Spitta, of Lawrence-Pountney-Lane, merchants\u201d).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>CLS1 retired from the family business and died in 1822 in Colchester, Essex. Two of his daughters also died in Colchester: Ann (1821) and \u00a0Sarah \u00a0(1823).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>2. Charles Lewis Spitta \u2018Junior\u2019 (1789-1849) <\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Second son of the above. He continued on the family business with brother Henry Author. CLS2 married Mary Colson (1793-1861) on 5 May 1814 at St Giles, Camberwell.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They had the following children:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Charles Lewis Spitta (1815\u20131846)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Robert John Spitta (1819\u20131900)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>On 29 May 1824 Peckham House was put on the market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>CLS2 died on 11 August 1849 in New York, USA (though \u201cformerly of Bishopsgate-street in the City of London\u201d).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>3. Charles Lewis Spitta (c1815-1846)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The elder son of Charles Lewis Spitta \u2018Junior\u2019 and Mary Colson. He married Harriet Breth (1825-1912) in 1841 in Bengal, India.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They had two children:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Charles Henry Spitta (1843-1888). Barrister-at- Law, of Lahore, Punjab, India. Died in Surbiton.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mary Catherine Spitta (1846-?)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Charles Lewis Spitta, \u201cFirst Lieutenant of the Corps of Bengal Engineers\u201d died on 18 October 1846 in Berhampur, West Bengal, India.
