J. A. and W. Lyon, bleachers, on lease. The land on which the house is built forms a portion of seven acres of land granted by Alice Loveday in 1667 to the above parish, and out of the rents and<br \/>\nprofits of the said land the authorities were directed to distribute \u00a35 amongst twenty poor widows on the 6th of September in each year ; on which occasion a sermon is preached by the minister, who receives the sum of twenty shillings for his trouble, and ten shillings are divided amongst the reader, clerk, and sexton.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-754 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/St-Mary-le-Strand-House.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"228\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"main-container\">\n<div id=\"page\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<article class=\"article\">\n<div id=\"content_box\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"hfeed\">\n<div id=\"post-589\" class=\"g post post-589 page type-page status-publish hentry\">\n<div class=\"single_page\">\n<div class=\"post-content box mark-links\">\n<p>The property has a frontage of about 789 feet, and is covered by about thirty houses, now known as St. Mary-le-Strand Place, and vested in the Trustees of the Charity Estates. The workhouse was erected under an Act of Parliament, in which was inserted a clause that no occupier of the workhouse should become chargeable to the<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_769\" style=\"width: 291px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-769\" class=\"wp-image-769 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1850-Cross-map-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1850-Cross-map-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peckhamsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1850-Cross-map.jpg 311w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cross, 1850 map<\/p><\/div>\n<p>parish of Camberwell by virtue of residence within the said building; now that it has ceased to be used as a workhouse it is to be feared that the worthy occupier, Mr. J. A. Lyon, who is himself a poor-law guardian, could readily prove a settlement, but it would be rather difficult to find a more comfortable &#8220;settlement&#8221; than St Mary-le-Strand workhouse as at present conducted. Camberwell is a model workhouse, but St. Mary of the Old Kent Road is a delightful retreat.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ye Parish of Camerwell<\/em> W.H.
